Paje, on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, is the island's kitesurfing heart, fringed by powder-white sand and a turquoise reef lagoon. The Kusi trade wind blows steadily from June to October, the main season, across water whose character shifts with the strong tides: vast flat shallows at some states, more open conditions at others. The reef keeps things relatively safe, suiting all levels, while seaweed farms and dhows give the lagoon a timeless feel. Warm water, a laid-back Swahili-coast vibe and a string of beach camps make Paje a favourite for combining reliable kiting with an exotic island escape.
