Lo Stagnone is a shallow saltwater lagoon near Marsala on Sicily's western coast, and one of the best places in the world to learn. The water stays waist to chest deep across a huge area, so beginners can stand, walk back and progress without fear of deep water or obstacles. Thermal winds build through the afternoon from spring into autumn, framed by the lagoon's old salt pans and windmills. A cluster of kite schools lines the shore, and the flat water is just as good for freestyle and foiling as it is for first lessons. Best ridden April to October.
